Learn to paint expressive, natural trees with confidence and clarity.

Trees are an essential element of any landscape or urban scene. In this 5-week course, you’ll develop the skills to confidently capture the beauty, structure, and variety of trees in watercolor—bringing more depth, atmosphere, and natural rhythm to your paintings.

We’ll explore how to depict different types of trees, from lush leafy canopies to bare winter branches. You’ll learn to approach both individual trees and dense forest compositions with a clear structure and artistic sensitivity.

This course focuses on both form and expression: how to balance line and shape, how to create dynamic washes, and how to use tonal contrast to convey volume and depth. We’ll also dive into the rich world of greens—learning how to mix complex, natural hues that go far beyond the typical “childlike green.”

Whether you paint landscapes, gardens, or urban scenes, mastering trees will open up a world of visual storytelling and bring your surroundings to life on paper.

All necessary materials are provided by the studio.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Tree Types & Structure: Understand how to paint a wide range of trees, from leafy crowns to bare branches.

  • Composing Forests: Learn artistic solutions for portraying groups of trees and building believable forest scenes.

  • Brushwork & Texture: Explore techniques like dry-on-wet and dry brush to suggest texture, density, and atmosphere.

  • Green Mixing Mastery: Create a palette of sophisticated greens through color layering and controlled mixing.

  • Line and Wash Balance: Combine drawing and painting elements to express both form and spontaneity.

  • Light & Volume: Use tonal contrasts to give your trees dimension and place them convincingly within a scene.
